About This Instrument

Web Harmonium is a free web harmonium — an Indian harmonium that runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Play it with a laptop keyboard, a touchscreen, or a MIDI controller.

The instrument has been a cornerstone of Hindustani classical music, bhajan, kirtan, and Bollywood playback for over a century. This virtual version brings that tradition online: tune to any key, switch octaves, add reverb, and practise with Sargam notation — all without installing an app.

The goal is simple: keep the harmonium one tap away, and let the rest of the site provide the song notes, raga guides, and practice tools that surround it.

The current library includes 32 published song lessons and 4 browser practice tools. These totals are calculated from the same data used to build the public pages.

Web Harmonium is more than a single instrument — it is a small practice studio that fits in a browser tab:

Built for the browser

The instrument is built with the Web Audio API from a single recorded harmonium reed, played back polyphonically with a convolution reverb tail. There is no backend and no account. The site loads as a static page, keeps working offline once you have visited it, and can be installed as a lightweight app. Your settings, presets, and recordings are stored only in your own browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.

Who prepares the lessons

Web Harmonium Editorial is the publishing identity used for the site's learning material. It does not claim a fictional teacher, institution, qualification, or endorsement. Lessons are prepared and reviewed against the notation visible on the page, the playable keyboard, the linked tools, and the site's editorial checklist before publication.

Every indexed song page now has a manual editorial entry for its particular learning goal. Shared page elements provide navigation and notation formatting, but practice advice is written page by page. Corrections, alternate traditions, accessibility reports, and rights questions are welcomed through the contact page.

This is an independent project, free to use with no paywall and no sign-up. Our Editorial and Rights Policy explains how song notation is checked, how corrections are handled, and which pages are excluded from advertising.
