What is a Sargam tuner?
A Sargam tuner listens to a note and tells you both its Western pitch (like C, D, or E) and the matching Sargam syllable (Sa, Re, Ga…). This free harmonium tuner runs in your browser using your microphone, so you can check vocal intonation or harmonium reeds without installing an app. It assumes Sa = C by default; change the root with the Transpose control on the web harmonium if you sing in another scale.
How to tune your harmonium or voice
Tap Start listening and play one harmonium reed, or sing a steady note. Watch the cents meter: a needle to the left means the note is flat, to the right means sharp, and centred means in tune. For vocal practice, hold Sa against the online shruti box drone and use the tuner to confirm you are landing on the right pitch. A repeatable three-note tuning check
- Hold Sa for two seconds and read the stable middle of the note.
- Move to Pa, wait for the display to settle, and notice whether the note consistently leans sharp or flat.
- Return to Sa without looking at the meter, then check the display. This tests the ear as well as the instrument.
Repeat the sequence three times at the same volume. A consistent small difference is more meaningful than one perfect reading followed by two unstable ones.
Why the tuner needle keeps moving
A voice changes pitch slightly during the attack, vibrato, breath, and release. A harmonium reed can also produce overtones that make the first reading jump. Use one steady vowel, move closer to the microphone in a quiet room, and judge the centre of the held note. Do not chase every movement by tightening the throat or changing bellows pressure.

By default this tuner treats Sa as C (middle C, MIDI 60). Sa is a movable reference, so many singers set it to C, D, F, or F# to suit their voice. Pick the key that feels comfortable, then keep every other Sargam note relative to it.

The tuner reports your pitch in cents (hundredths of a semitone) in real time. It is precise enough for vocal intonation and for checking whether a harmonium reed is drifting flat or sharp, as long as you play one clear note at a time in a quiet room.
