Om Jai Jagdish Hare Sargam notation

Read the four short lines as two questions and two answers. The komal Ga and komal Ni give the practice version its softer colour, so compare them against the shruti box before joining the phrases.

Practice method for this lesson

Sing the first line once, then play it. If the response arrives early, count four quiet beats before beginning again. Use one finger per nearby note until the pulse is secure, then choose a fingering that avoids crossing during the Pa-to-Dha movement.

Aarti accompaniment plan

For group singing, keep the harmonium part lighter than the voices. Play the opening note of each small phrase clearly and shorten the notes between words so the singers can breathe without the keyboard filling every gap.

A useful self-check is to stop playing for one response line. If the group keeps the pitch comfortably, the drone and your previous cadence are doing their job.

Reading the notation: capitals are shuddh notes, lowercase are komal, Ḿ is tivra Ma, Ṡ is the upper Sa, a trailing dot (N.) is the lower octave, | separates phrases and - holds a note. New to Sargam? The harmonium notes guide maps every syllable to a key and a Western pitch.
