Gayatri Mantra harmonium notes

The Gayatri Mantra is better approached as pitch-centred chanting than as a fast song. This lesson keeps the melody narrow so learners can hear whether the voice and harmonium remain anchored to Sa.

Gayatri Mantra Sargam notation

Use the first two lines as a breath-and-pitch exercise. Play the phrase, stop the keys, chant it back, and check whether the final syllable returns near Sa before continuing.

Practice method for this lesson

Set a quiet drone and use very little reverb. The repeated notes should be separate but gentle. If the pitch rises during the chant, lower the starting Sa rather than pushing the upper phrase.

A three-round mantra routine

Round one is harmonium only, round two is voice only, and round three combines both at half volume. Recording the third round is more useful than simply repeating it many times because you can hear whether the voice remains stable after the breath.

This page teaches a simple practice melody; chanting traditions differ, so follow your teacher or community tradition when one is available.

Reading the notation: capitals are shuddh notes, lowercase are komal, Ḿ is tivra Ma, Ṡ is the upper Sa, a trailing dot (N.) is the lower octave, | separates phrases and - holds a note. New to Sargam? The harmonium notes guide maps every syllable to a key and a Western pitch.
